"It's time for greatness -- not for greed. It's a time for idealism -- not ideology. It is a time not just for compassionate words, but compassionate action."-Marian Wright Edelman

What is Classism?

Classism is any form of discrimination against people of lower class standing, especially in the form of economic status (Wikipedia). Under classism, people are divided by their abilities, their income, their wealth, their
occupations, and the educational level they have achieved.

Classism and Education

Sadly, classism is a large problem in our school systems. Students from different social backgrounds do not have the same educational experiences. The lower children are on the hierarchical scale, the less likely they are to have the resources they need in order to learn. Children of different social classes will most likely attend different types of schools have different teachers, study different courses, and graduate at different rates, ultimately leaving them more different than when they started. Equity of opportunity is vital for success in the classroom.
